Missing Moms

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NAMUS), 600,000 people go missing every year. Thankfully, many of these children, women and men return home shortly afterward, but tens of thousands of individuals stay missing for over a year, with few – if any – leads to go on. Approximately 4,500 unidentified remains are found each year, as well. Yet, despite the serious nature of these cases of missing and unidentified persons, there are still people who will fake kidnappings and perpetrate hoaxes for their own gains on a regular basis – often at the expense of others.

Content Warnings: abductions & missing persons, unsolved cases, hoaxes, self-harm, adultery, racism.

Christopher Gattis

You would never expect hell to be in the Appalachian mountains of Big Stone Gap, Virginia—and yet—that is exactly how the inmates of Wallens Ridge State Prison describe it. This “supermax” prison houses up to 1,200 of the United States’ most dangerous male criminals. When it first opened, Wallens Ridge was renowned for the violence it showed its inmates. Warning shots, rubber pellets, and stun guns were frequently used to scare and control their population. Christopher Gattis is one of those inmates. On Thanksgiving Day of 2017, Christopher shot and murdered his wife, stepdaughter, and stepdaughter’s boyfriend. Now, he is serving a life sentence at Wallens Ridge State Prison.

Content Warnings: familial murder, abusive prison conditions

The Sherry Murders

Romance scams, or “lonely hearts” scams, are one of the oldest swindles in the book. They work when a fraudster gains the affection of a victim, usually in a long-distance relationship. Once the scammer establishes trust, they will request money or financial information from their victim. The advent of the internet and dating sites has made lonely hearts scams more popular and harmful than ever. Join us for today’s episode to discover how, through a complex web of lies and a brigade of greedy, immoral people, one particular lonely heart scam would end in the cold-blooded murders of Judge Vincent Sherry and his wife, Margaret Sherry.

Content Warnings: murder, police corruption, scams & manipulation

Terri Williams X UpStairs Lounge

In today’s episode, we will talk about murdered members of the LGBTQIA community. Every attempt has been made to be culturally sensitive and to use the correct terminology. Any errors are completely unintentional. Each member of my team, myself included, considers themselves to be an advocate for the LGBTQIA community, and it is our fervent hope that we have treated these individuals with the dignity and respect they deserve.

We are covering the murder of Terri Williams and the UpStairs Lounge fire that claimed 32 lives.

Unfortunately, our LGBTQIA+ friends still need allies to help them defend against discrimination. Even today, many cis-gendered, heterosexual individuals believe that AIDS is a punishment from God for being gay. Violence against transgenders is still extremely high, particularly transgenders of color. For more information about how to be an ally, visit glaad.org For information about the dangers this community faces, please visit the Human Rights Campaign.

Wondery Presents: The Execution of Bonny Lee Bakley

On May 4, 2001, Bonny Lee Bakley was found fatally shot in a car on a dark North Hollywood street. The prime suspect was her husband, famed actor Robert Blake. But Bonny, a longtime con artist, had plenty of enemies. She left behind a trail of men she’d scammed, and she had a volatile relationship with Christian Brando, the troubled son of movie star Marlon Brando.
Not since the O.J. Simpson case had the eyes of the nation been so fixated on a homicide. The search for Bonny’s killer took detectives on an eleven-month odyssey across the country and through Hollywood’s underbelly of hustlers, drug addicts, and would-be hitmen. It would be the most expensive murder investigation in LAPD history to date.
This is the story of Robert and Bonny’s toxic relationship, her shocking murder, and his chaotic trial. Did actor Robert Blake kill his wife? Or was the murder someone else’s vendetta?
From Wondery, and the team behind the hit series Hollywood & Crime (The Dating Game Killer, The Wonderland Murders, Death of Starlet) comes a six-part series about love, obsession and fame gone wrong. Co-hosted by Tracy Pattin and Josh Lucas.

Introducing: The Fall Line Podcast

This is an excerpt from The Fall Line Podcast’s two-part series on the unsolved murder of Moses Williams Junior. It’s from Episode One: Fat Man

On Super Bowl Sunday, 2012, a gunshot rang out across the darkened streets of  Aiken, SC–and 19-year-old Moses “Fat Man” Williams Jr., a popular former high-school football star, slumped in the driver’s seat of his car.Though his girlfriend and her sister were no more than a hundred feet away, and he was parked in a busy neighborhood, no one could—or would—say who’d shot the young father, who worked seven days a week to support his family. But his mother, Timica James, was determined to find out.

Murder & Movies

Although true crime has experienced a huge renaissance over the last several years, movies based on true crimes have been popular for decades. In the 1930s, many movies were made, based on prominent gangsters of the time, such as Al Capone, and Ma Barker. However, in the mid-30s, when the Hays Code was enforced, much of the drama was watered down. It wasn’t until the 1960s that violence became prevalent on the screen, and well-known movies based on true crime were made, such as In Cold Blood and Bonnie and Clyde. Of course, in the 1970s and 1980s, made-for-TV movies based on true stories became popular. Movies typically take some liberties about the crimes and often have to leave out important details, to avoid a movie that’s several hours long.

Juvenile Offenders

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. In the United States, dating back to the Thirteen Colonies, approximately 364 juveniles have been executed by individual colonies, states, or the federal government, for crimes they were found guilty of committing. 22 individuals were executed between 1976 and 2005, for crimes committed when they were juveniles. In 1976, the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty, and in 2005, they ruled that juveniles could not be sentenced to death, as it was a violation of the 8th Amendment (1).

Ebony & Deanna: 9-1-1 Domestic Violence

In Today’s episode, you will hear actual 911 calls. We advise extreme caution while listening. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, please reach out to someone for help. Please call the national domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. That’s 1-800-799-7233 or go to thehotline.org to chat with someone online.

Unfortunately, we discuss domestic violence all too often on this show. One reason is that there are 20 people per minute who are abused by an intimate partner in the United States. This equates to more than 10 million men and women annually. 15 percent of all violent crimes are due to intimate partner violence. There are 20,000 calls made to domestic call centers each day in the United States (1). Many times, a victim of this form of abuse calls 911, in the hopes officers will be able to respond in time. The International Association of Chiefs of Police has created guidelines on how law enforcement agencies should respond to calls of domestic violence, and how 911 telecommunication operators should respond (2). Most of the time, officers are able to respond quickly and effectively to these calls, but sadly, there are times that the violence plays out on the 911 call, with fatal consequences.

Double Trouble

Twins fascinate us, especially when they are identical. Twins have been studied for many years, both psychologically and physiologically. The most memorable and horrific of these studies was conducted by Josef Mengele, the Nazi “Angel of Death” at the Auschwitz Death Camp. Other studies have followed sets of twins from birth into adulthood. Many of these studies followed identical twins who were separated at birth and raised apart, to try to determine if a person’s personality traits were a result of nature versus nurture. In many cases, it is definitely nature. We could devote an entire podcast to the fascinating psychology of twins, but we are going to focus on twins who murder together.

Wondery Presents: Killer Psyche

What causes people to become killers? KILLER PSYCHE is a true-crime podcast from
Wondery that covers high-profile cases that shocked the world. Host Candice Delong
uses her experience as a clinical psychiatric nurse and FBI Criminal Profiler to dissect
the motivations and behaviors of the most terrifying criminals in history. In a recent
episode, Candice explores the case of Pedro Rodrigues Filho, also known as The
Brazilian Dexter. Rodrigues went on to murder, by his count, more than 100 people —
most of them while he was behind bars. To many, he was a hero — a vigilante seeking
justice for victims. But to others, he was just a cold-blooded murderer. This is just a
preview of Killer Psyche, but you can listen to the full episode at

True Crime Convos on Spotify Greenroom: Mark Redwine

Mark Redwine is a 59-year-old man from Colorado who was convicted in October 2021 for the murder of his 13-year-old son, Dylan Redwine, in November 2012.

After flying to his father’s home for a court-ordered visit, Dylan sent several text messages to his mother and his friends before suddenly going silent on the night of November 18, 2012. It was the last time anyone would hear from him.

Mark Redwine contacted Dylan’s mother to ask if he’d heard from their son, which sparked a missing person case that would continue for the next several months. Throughout several interviews during this time, Redwine would have conflicting stories about Dylan in the hours leading up to his disappearance, sparking red flags with investigators.

In June of 2013, partial remains that were later confirmed to belong to Dylan were discovered not far from Redwine’s home. It wasn’t until 2015, however, that Dylan’s skull would be discovered by a pair of hikers, nearly five miles away from where the original remains had been found. The skull showed evidence of violence, and in 2017, Mark Redwine was arrested for Dylan’s murder.

During the lengthy trial process, which included years of delays due to, among other things, a global health crisis, the prosecution would go on to say that Redwine murdered Dylan in a fit of rage after his son confronted him about some compromising photos he’d found of Redwine, including him wearing women’s clothing, wearing a diaper, and consuming feces.

Redwine was found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse and sentenced to 48 years in prison.

Wondery Presents: The Shrink Next Door

Veteran journalist Joe Nocera’s neighbor in the Hamptons was a therapist named Ike. Ike counted celebrities and Manhattan elites as his patients. He’d host star-studded parties at his eccentric vacation house. But one summer, Joe discovered that Ike was gone and everything he’d thought he’d known about his neighbor — and the house next door — was wrong. From Wondery, the company behind Dirty John and Dr. Death, and Bloomberg, “The Shrink Next Door” is a story about power, control, and turning to the wrong person for help for three decades. Written and hosted by Joe Nocera, a columnist for Bloomberg. The Shrink Next Door is now an Apple Original series, starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. Watch now only on Apple TV+.

Lois & Betty

Since 1976, when the death penalty was reinstated in the United States, seventeen women have been executed. The two women discussed in today’s episode have the distinction of being the oldest women executed in the country. The women had far different motives for murder, and both women enlisted family members to assist them with their deeds. In this episode, we share two cases: Lois Nadean Smith & Betty Lou Beets.

Wondery Presents: Operator

During the 1-900 number craze of the Nineties, one company provided the vast
majority of phone sex. American Telnet was an empire founded by the man who
called himself “The Telephone Pimp.” He ran the company “like General Motors”
and got filthy rich doing it. But for the (mostly) women who answered the calls
and delivered fantasies 24-7, it was a different story. The powerful stigma against
sex work was always lurking just beneath the surface until it threatened to tear
apart the whole company. Hosted by Tina Horn (Why Are People Into That?),
OPERATOR is an eight-part series about big ambitions, Shakespearean-level
corporate backstabbing, men and women at the cutting edge of a technological
revolution…and on the front lines of a sexual one.

Crime Of The Century

In June 1971, President Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs. The “war” increased the size, as well as the presence of federal drug control agencies. Nixon was also responsible for mandatory sentencing for drug offenses, and no-knock warrants. One of President Nixon’s top aides later said that the planning for the war on drugs began during the 1968 campaign when Nixon believed he had two “enemies,” the anti-establishment left and black people. The President couldn’t single out these two elements of society, but he could associate hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and let the media demonize these two groups. The President even made marijuana a Schedule One drug, the most restrictive class of drugs, which includes heroin. Marijuana was supposed to be reviewed by a special commission, which recommended decriminalization of it in 1972. The President refused to budge. Between 1973 and 1977, eleven states decriminalized it, and in October 1977, a Senate Judiciary Committee voted to decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use. However, parents became concerned about marijuana use, and with Ronald Reagan’s election as President, the drug war opened up full throttle.

Halloween Bonus Episode 2021

Halloween is steeped in lore, legend, and history. From its beginnings in Samhain (Saa-wn), to the subsequent adoption by the Catholic Church of November 1st as All Saints’ Day, Halloween has long been considered the day when the veil between the living and the dead was lifted. In Colonial America, the Puritans did not celebrate Halloween, but further south, in Maryland, the telling of ghost stories became commonplace. In the 1800s as more Irish immigrants settled in America, trick-or-treating was adopted, along with dressing up in costumes, and the creation of jack-o-lantern (1). Slasher films, starting with Black Christmas, became popular in 1974, coincidentally in the same year, Ronald Clark O’Bryan gave his son candy laced with cyanide. He was called the man who ruined Halloween, and to this day, parents still check candy to try to detect tampering. Ok on to the show…

An Exorcism

In 2014, Pope Francis and the Vatican formally recognized the International Association of Exorcists, which had 250 exorcists in 250 countries (3). Of course, Protestants also carry out exorcisms, but according to Dr. Andrew Chestnut of Virginia Commonwealth University, the Catholic rites are more formal, whereas Protestant exorcisms are often more theatrical. Protestant exorcists will frequently interview the possessed, to try to determine which demon possesses them (4). Unfortunately, there are dozens of non-sanctioned exorcisms that occur in small, cult-like religions, and some that occur without any church affiliation at all. Many of these rituals leave their victims injured or dead. Sadly, a large number of these victims are children (5).

Wondery Presents: Shadow of Truth

It’s one of the most haunting murder cases you’ll ever hear about, and it takes place in a small town in Israel. Tair Rada was only 13-years-old when her body was found inside a locked bathroom stall. She was viciously murdered during a school day, and yet no one saw or heard a thing. The police arrested the janitor, Roman Zadorov, and he eventually confessed, but this was far from being the end of it. Based on the hit true-crime series from Netflix, the podcast “Shadow of Truth” will take you on a journey into one of the wildest and most contested murder cases in the history of Israel, as it reaches its final resolution, 15 years after it all started.

Murder by Vehicle

Murder by vehicle occurs in small numbers every year. These are often tracked as a vehicle accidents, so good numbers are not available for how many people are killed this way each year. Many of the cases are the end result of a domestic argument or dispute, or as the result of inebriation (1,2). It appears this is predominantly a female-chosen method for murder. The two cases discussed today were apparently done in a heat of passion.

Deadly Jealousy

In the United States, it is believed nearly 10 million people experience domestic abuse every year. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, about 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. Victims are often isolated by their partners, leaving them disconnected from their family and friends. Victims are often ashamed of the abuse and are afraid of their abusers.

Brianna Denison

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. It is common knowledge that children who are abused or maltreated frequently have long-lasting effects as a result of the trauma they suffered. There are many physical, psychological, behavioral, and even societal implications of child abuse. The immediate result of child abuse is usually physical, both in terms of their wounds, but also potential brain damage from violent abuse. Mistreatment can lead to stunted brain growth, which can then lead to psychological issues immediately, or later in life. However, many studies have found that child abuse has been linked to a higher rate of diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, back problems, vision problems, and more (40).

Psychological issues that stem from child abuse include poor cognitive skills, depression, low self-esteem, and attachment issues. Children who grew up in these situations have a higher prevalence of suicide attempts than those who did not. Additionally, those adults who do suffer from major depression have lower positive outcomes with antidepressants. Children of abuse are more likely to develop antisocial tendencies, which can lead to criminal behavior (40).

Other studies show “that abused or neglected children are more likely to engage in sexual risk-taking as they reach adolescence” including a higher number of sexual partners and having sex in exchange for money or other material items. There is a higher prevalence of chemical dependency in adults who were maltreated as a child, particularly alcoholism. Of course, children of abuse are also more likely to also abuse their own children, although these numbers are not as high as previously believed. However, a study from the early 2010s showed that 26% of inmates incarcerated for murder had been subjected to child abuse, and an additional study showed that of 43 death row inmates, 36 had been sexually or physically abused, 37 were neglected, and 31 witnessed domestic violence growing up (40, 41).

Despite the large numbers of violent offenders who were abused as children, the number of child abuse victims who do not resort to violence as adults is far greater – these children had broken the cycle of abuse (40, 41). Unfortunately, today’s perpetrator was not able to break the cycle of violence, destroying a family as a result. Okay…onto the show.

Wondery Presents: Suspect

A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day — choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.

Wondery Presents: Killer Psyche

When a shocking crime occurs, people ask “WHY?” Was it about power, ego, or revenge? On
KILLER PSYCHE, retired FBI criminal profiler Candice DeLong draws on her decades of
experience to reveal why these murderers and criminals committed these acts. She will reveal
fascinating new details about what drove these people, including cases she worked on
first-hand. Candice has been called the FBI’s “real-life Clarice Starling,” and she will share
specific psychological methods and profiling techniques that experts use to understand the
deepest part of the most complex, fascinating, and twisted minds, from the Unabomber to Dr.
Death to El Chapo.

Hadden Clark – Hosted by Eric of True Consequences

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. I’m Eric from the podcast, True Consequences, filling in for Lanie, who is on maternity leave. Research shows that children who are severely abused as children are three times more likely to develop schizophrenia as an adult (13, 14). In addition, “neglect and abuse in childhood have been shown to contribute to an increased risk of future violence” (15). Although this isn’t a reason to excuse the behavior, it does explain why some men and women grow up to be violent. Okay…onto the show.

About Eric: Eric Carter-Landin was born and raised in New Mexico. As a child, Eric lived in poverty and watched his single mother struggle to make ends meet. When he was six (1986) his brother was murdered and the killer was never prosecuted. Because of this and because of the amount of unsolved or unresolved cases in New Mexico, Eric decided to create a podcast that focuses on crime in New Mexico. True Consequences is based in Albuquerque and was started to bring awareness to the general public about some of the most known and unknown cases. This is all done to try to affect change and leverage public awareness to help drive some of these cases from cold to solved. This will not be done overnight and will take the efforts of every listener and member of the public but together we can make an impact. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to subscribe, rate, and review.

Marie Pompilio – Hosted by Colleen from Misconduct

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. I’m your guest host, Coleen, from Misconduct. Teen dating violence is a growing epidemic. A study published in the Journal of the Academic Medical Association in 2017 revealed that of the 2000 adolescent homicides between 2003 and 2016, 150 of these were committed by former boyfriends or girlfriends. 90% of these were female, with an average age of 17. In almost 80 percent of the cases, the male perpetrator was 18 years old or older (1). Today, we discuss an instance of break-up violence from 1988, before any real understanding of stalking behaviors or other red flags. Okay…onto the show.

Introducing – Chameleon: High Rollers

From Campside Media, Chameleon’s new second season, “High Rollers,” tells the seedy
story of Operation Botox, an FBI undercover investigation designed to catch money launderers

Hosted by investigative journalist Trevor Aaronson, this new season uses FBI
undercover recordings that take listeners on a journey inside a two-year sting operation that
goes off the rails in ways both tragic and comic.
Set in “Sin City” Las Vegas, nothing comes short to this mind-blowing heist that involves
all the classic Vegas highs and lows:

o  high rollers get involved in a money-laundering scheme
o an informant runs his own scams
o a reported love triangle
o strippers
o and millions at stake
o (like exactly what you see in the movies, except this actually happened)

It’s an investigative thriller that challenges listeners to consider and question the enormous
unchecked powers of the FBI and federal agents’ decisions to investigate unsuspecting
Americans.

Don’t miss this mind-blowing crime caper. Chameleon: High Rollers is available
every Tuesday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you listen.
