Twisted Tales of Love and Murder

Welcome back to True Crime Cases with Lanie! 🕵️‍♀️ Join me as we journey into the shadowy corners of true crime, exploring cases that defy reality and challenge our perceptions. From chilling mysteries that surpass fiction to eerie truths that eclipse imagination, our podcast dives deep into the darkest depths of criminal intrigue.

In our episode titled “Stranger Than Fiction,” we uncovered a sinister reality as a woman’s words turned deadly, echoing her own written words. And in “Babysitter Killers,” we peeled back the silver screen to reveal the chilling reflections of our darkest fears. Today, we’re delving into cases that could’ve been plucked from the heart of the musical Chicago, where women’s involvement in their husbands’ murders casts doubt on innocence.

But let’s not be swayed by speculation – today, we anchor ourselves in stark reality. Fred Oesterreich and Robert Samuels, victims entwined in stories of deceit and darkness, reveal hauntingly real tales that pose unsettling questions about the lengths people go to rid themselves of a spouse. Join us as we uncover the harrowing murders of Fred Oesterreich and Robert Samuels.

Love Bites: Love Triangles & Parachutes

The love triangle is a very popular trope in romance and young adult novels. The reader is driven throughout the story, wanting to find out whether our protagonist will choose the dark, brooding stranger or the warm and kind friend they’ve had since childhood. We’ve all encountered it in some form of popular media, and whether we love or hate it, it seems like it’s here to stay.

Content Warnings: infidelity, murder.

Influence of a Butterfly: Chaos Theory and a Murder Case

You’ve probably heard of the term “the butterfly effect.” It comes from chaos theory, the idea that something as small and seemingly insignificant as a butterfly flapping its wings could influence the path of a tornado that forms weeks later. Today, an appeal in Arkansas could have led to a retrial for a man who had been given a death sentence in Idaho a year earlier – after over 20 years of robberies, rapes, and murders.

Note: This episode discusses sensitive topics such as sexual assault, murder, sexual abuse, and the killing of minors. Please seek appropriate support if you are affected by these issues.

SPONSORS: Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, but indoor air could be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air, causing health risks. Almost half the population lives in areas with unhealthy air pollution levels. Airborne allergens like pollen, pet dander, and mold are common triggers for allergies and asthma. Introducing AirDoctor, an air purifier that CNN, Money, ABC, and more have featured. With its UltraHEPA filter, AirDoctor removes 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, including particles as small as 0.003 microns. Beyond The Bars

Step into the complex and contentious world of the death penalty in the United States – a topic that has haunted the country’s history for centuries. From the early days of the colonies to the present, the practice of sentencing criminals to death has been a hotly debated issue, one that has polarized even the most seasoned legal professionals and human rights advocates.

The Carr Brothers

Wichita, Kansas, was a glorious snowy sight on the night of December 14th, 2000. The snow muffled all sound, and Christmas decorations twinkled warmly through the gloom… something that gave a faint glimmer of hope to a 25-year-old woman. The decorations shone as a light to guide her as she stumbled for nearly a mile across snowy grounds and over a barbed wire fence, freezing and severely injured, to seek help from anywhere and anyone who would offer it.

Stranger Than Fiction

It’s an almost laughable headline – “woman googles how to murder her husband.” Though the truth may be stranger than fiction, clickbait is precisely that – bait to get you to look at the story, a hook to spread it as far as possible so that news sites get as much traffic and, therefore, ad revenue as they can. But behind these humorous clickbait headlines are always stories of lives cut short and tragedies befalling people who just wanted to love and care for their spouses, only for them to turn around and commit the most permanent of all betrayals against them.

Content Warnings: This episode discusses mental health issues, manipulation, mentions of suicide

Forensic science is always expanding and because of its complicated nature, scientists cannot get it right every time – no matter how hard they try, or how diligently they work. However, that isn’t to say there are no cases of intentional gross negligence and misconduct. Today, we look at a case that threatens the integrity of a prominent forensic scientist, and the ground-breaking case that helped cement that same scientist’s career.

Content Warnings: this episode contains a discussion of murder, assault on a pregnant woman, discrediting of an individual with mental illnesses, and investigative negligence/corruption.

North and South Dakota are both known for their large expanses of farmland, sleepy towns, and close-knit communities. According to Safewise, both states’ violent crime rates are lower than the national average, and their residents feel safer than in most other states. The biggest threat to North and South Dakotans usually isn’t murder—it’s people stealing packages from their front porches. But, sadly, murderous romantic entanglements can happen anywhere.

Content Warnings: murder, infidelity, brief mentions of suicide.

The World’s End

The city of Edinburgh, both above and below, is supposedly haunted by all manner of ghosts and ghouls. Though much of this remains a distant memory and fodder for ghost stories, tourists, and local schoolchildren, Edinburgh does have its very own tragedies from modern times. Even decades on, these events are still fresh in the minds of those who live there and throughout the rest of Scotland.

The Babysitter Killers

The innocent babysitter having to fend for herself and fight off or flee from a murderer in a house, either her own or the unfamiliar home of a family she works for, is a popular urban legend and the plot to many a teen slasher movie or campfire story… But sadly, as with most urban legends, it is a tale that does have some basis in reality, as we will see in the two cases covered in today’s episode.

The Crimes of David Copenhefer

Digital forensics is an integral part of crime scene investigations. Its study includes any information that is stored in binary form – smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and more digital devices can all contain useful information for a criminal investigation. Clearly, digital forensics has come a long way from back in the eighties, when police didn’t know how to handle computers, let alone the data stored on them… but it had to learn how to walk before it could run.

Content Warnings: abduction, ransom, descriptions of fatal gunshot wounds, murder, mentions of child pornography.

Murderous Ministers Pt. 3

In the Christian Bible, the last five of the Ten Commandments are, “Thou shalt not kill; Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shall not bear false witness; Thou shall not covet.” For far too many religious leaders, things go downhill when they break the tenth commandment by coveting a female member of their church – and, all too frequently, this leads to adultery.

Missing Moms

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NAMUS), 600,000 people go missing every year. Thankfully, many of these children, women and men return home shortly afterward, but tens of thousands of individuals stay missing for over a year, with few – if any – leads to go on. Approximately 4,500 unidentified remains are found each year, as well. Yet, despite the serious nature of these cases of missing and unidentified persons, there are still people who will fake kidnappings and perpetrate hoaxes for their own gains on a regular basis – often at the expense of others.

Content Warnings: abductions & missing persons, unsolved cases, hoaxes, self-harm, adultery, racism.

Christopher Gattis

You would never expect hell to be in the Appalachian mountains of Big Stone Gap, Virginia—and yet—that is exactly how the inmates of Wallens Ridge State Prison describe it. This “supermax” prison houses up to 1,200 of the United States’ most dangerous male criminals. When it first opened, Wallens Ridge was renowned for the violence it showed its inmates. Warning shots, rubber pellets, and stun guns were frequently used to scare and control their population. Christopher Gattis is one of those inmates. On Thanksgiving Day of 2017, Christopher shot and murdered his wife, stepdaughter, and stepdaughter’s boyfriend. Now, he is serving a life sentence at Wallens Ridge State Prison.

Content Warnings: familial murder, abusive prison conditions

Terri Williams X UpStairs Lounge

In today’s episode, we will talk about murdered members of the LGBTQIA community. Every attempt has been made to be culturally sensitive and to use the correct terminology. Any errors are completely unintentional. Each member of my team, myself included, considers themselves to be an advocate for the LGBTQIA community, and it is our fervent hope that we have treated these individuals with the dignity and respect they deserve.

We are covering the murder of Terri Williams and the UpStairs Lounge fire that claimed 32 lives.

Unfortunately, our LGBTQIA+ friends still need allies to help them defend against discrimination. Even today, many cis-gendered, heterosexual individuals believe that AIDS is a punishment from God for being gay. Violence against transgenders is still extremely high, particularly transgenders of color. For more information about how to be an ally, visit glaad.org For information about the dangers this community faces, please visit the Human Rights Campaign.

Introducing: The Fall Line Podcast

This is an excerpt from The Fall Line Podcast’s two-part series on the unsolved murder of Moses Williams Junior. It’s from Episode One: Fat Man

On Super Bowl Sunday, 2012, a gunshot rang out across the darkened streets of  Aiken, SC–and 19-year-old Moses “Fat Man” Williams Jr., a popular former high-school football star, slumped in the driver’s seat of his car.Though his girlfriend and her sister were no more than a hundred feet away, and he was parked in a busy neighborhood, no one could—or would—say who’d shot the young father, who worked seven days a week to support his family. But his mother, Timica James, was determined to find out.

Murder & Movies

Although true crime has experienced a huge renaissance over the last several years, movies based on true crimes have been popular for decades. In the 1930s, many movies were made, based on prominent gangsters of the time, such as Al Capone, and Ma Barker. However, in the mid-30s, when the Hays Code was enforced, much of the drama was watered down. It wasn’t until the 1960s that violence became prevalent on the screen, and well-known movies based on true crime were made, such as In Cold Blood and Bonnie and Clyde. Of course, in the 1970s and 1980s, made-for-TV movies based on true stories became popular. Movies typically take some liberties about the crimes and often have to leave out important details, to avoid a movie that’s several hours long.

Juvenile Offenders

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. In the United States, dating back to the Thirteen Colonies, approximately 364 juveniles have been executed by individual colonies, states, or the federal government, for crimes they were found guilty of committing. 22 individuals were executed between 1976 and 2005, for crimes committed when they were juveniles. In 1976, the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty, and in 2005, they ruled that juveniles could not be sentenced to death, as it was a violation of the 8th Amendment (1).

Ebony & Deanna: 9-1-1 Domestic Violence

In Today’s episode, you will hear actual 911 calls. We advise extreme caution while listening. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, please reach out to someone for help. Please call the national domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. That’s 1-800-799-7233 or go to thehotline.org to chat with someone online.

Unfortunately, we discuss domestic violence all too often on this show. One reason is that there are 20 people per minute who are abused by an intimate partner in the United States. This equates to more than 10 million men and women annually. 15 percent of all violent crimes are due to intimate partner violence. There are 20,000 calls made to domestic call centers each day in the United States (1). Many times, a victim of this form of abuse calls 911, in the hopes officers will be able to respond in time. The International Association of Chiefs of Police has created guidelines on how law enforcement agencies should respond to calls of domestic violence, and how 911 telecommunication operators should respond (2). Most of the time, officers are able to respond quickly and effectively to these calls, but sadly, there are times that the violence plays out on the 911 call, with fatal consequences.

True Crime Convos on Spotify Greenroom: Mark Redwine

Mark Redwine is a 59-year-old man from Colorado who was convicted in October 2021 for the murder of his 13-year-old son, Dylan Redwine, in November 2012.

After flying to his father’s home for a court-ordered visit, Dylan sent several text messages to his mother and his friends before suddenly going silent on the night of November 18, 2012. It was the last time anyone would hear from him.

Mark Redwine contacted Dylan’s mother to ask if he’d heard from their son, which sparked a missing person case that would continue for the next several months. Throughout several interviews during this time, Redwine would have conflicting stories about Dylan in the hours leading up to his disappearance, sparking red flags with investigators.

In June of 2013, partial remains that were later confirmed to belong to Dylan were discovered not far from Redwine’s home. It wasn’t until 2015, however, that Dylan’s skull would be discovered by a pair of hikers, nearly five miles away from where the original remains had been found. The skull showed evidence of violence, and in 2017, Mark Redwine was arrested for Dylan’s murder.

During the lengthy trial process, which included years of delays due to, among other things, a global health crisis, the prosecution would go on to say that Redwine murdered Dylan in a fit of rage after his son confronted him about some compromising photos he’d found of Redwine, including him wearing women’s clothing, wearing a diaper, and consuming feces.

Redwine was found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse and sentenced to 48 years in prison.

Lois & Betty

Since 1976, when the death penalty was reinstated in the United States, seventeen women have been executed. The two women discussed in today’s episode have the distinction of being the oldest women executed in the country. The women had far different motives for murder, and both women enlisted family members to assist them with their deeds. In this episode, we share two cases: Lois Nadean Smith & Betty Lou Beets.

Crime Of The Century

In June 1971, President Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs. The “war” increased the size, as well as the presence of federal drug control agencies. Nixon was also responsible for mandatory sentencing for drug offenses, and no-knock warrants. One of President Nixon’s top aides later said that the planning for the war on drugs began during the 1968 campaign when Nixon believed he had two “enemies,” the anti-establishment left and black people. The President couldn’t single out these two elements of society, but he could associate hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and let the media demonize these two groups. The President even made marijuana a Schedule One drug, the most restrictive class of drugs, which includes heroin. Marijuana was supposed to be reviewed by a special commission, which recommended decriminalization of it in 1972. The President refused to budge. Between 1973 and 1977, eleven states decriminalized it, and in October 1977, a Senate Judiciary Committee voted to decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use. However, parents became concerned about marijuana use, and with Ronald Reagan’s election as President, the drug war opened up full throttle.

Boys on the Tracks – Guest Hosts: All Crime No Cattle

Welcome back to the True Crime Fan Club podcast. We’re your guest hosts Erin and Shea of the All Crime, No Cattle podcast. We are sitting in for Lanie, who is on maternity leave. The case we are going to talk about today is likely familiar to true crime fans. Over the years, this case has become more than an unsolved mystery, it has also become one woman’s crusade for justice over the corruption and abuse of power by county, state, and even federal officials. The biggest source for this episode was Mara Leveritt’s book, The Boys on the Tracks.  Okay…onto the show.

Hadden Clark – Hosted by Eric of True Consequences

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. I’m Eric from the podcast, True Consequences, filling in for Lanie, who is on maternity leave. Research shows that children who are severely abused as children are three times more likely to develop schizophrenia as an adult (13, 14). In addition, “neglect and abuse in childhood have been shown to contribute to an increased risk of future violence” (15). Although this isn’t a reason to excuse the behavior, it does explain why some men and women grow up to be violent. Okay…onto the show.

True Consequences Podcast
https://www.trueconsequences.com/

About Eric: Eric Carter-Landin was born and raised in New Mexico. As a child, Eric lived in poverty and watched his single mother struggle to make ends meet. When he was six (1986) his brother was murdered and the killer was never prosecuted. Because of this and because of the amount of unsolved or unresolved cases in New Mexico, Eric decided to create a podcast that focuses on crime in New Mexico. True Consequences is based in Albuquerque and was started to bring awareness to the general public about some of the most known and unknown cases. This is all done to try to affect change and leverage public awareness to help drive some of these cases from cold to solved. This will not be done overnight and will take the efforts of every listener and member of the public but together we can make an impact. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to subscribe, rate, and review.

Marie Pompilio – Hosted by Colleen from Misconduct

Welcome back to the TCFC podcast. I’m your guest host, Coleen, from Misconduct. Teen dating violence is a growing epidemic. A study published in the Journal of the Academic Medical Association in 2017 revealed that of the 2000 adolescent homicides between 2003 and 2016, 150 of these were committed by former boyfriends or girlfriends. 90% of these were female, with an average age of 17. In almost 80 percent of the cases, the male perpetrator was 18 years old or older (1). Today, we discuss an instance of break-up violence from 1988, before any real understanding of stalking behaviors or other red flags. Okay…onto the show.

The Wamsley Murders

As we have learned before, children kill their parents for many reasons: to stop abuse, because they are about to be cut off financially, as a result of a psychotic break. Today’s episode looks at another reason: greed. It also looks at how corrupt the justice system can be, and might leave you questioning how fair some sentences are. Okay…onto the show.

All of us dream of winning the lottery. Millions to make our lives easier, to lavish extravagant gifts on our families and friends, and take time off from work. But many winners of the lottery find that it’s not all sunshine and roses, and studies show that 70% of winners are broke within seven years of winning…for those who live, that is.

Dimebag – REPLAY

Darrell ‘Dimebag’ Abbott was one of the founders of Pantera. His life was tragically ended when a crazed fan stormed the stage. His delusions caused him to believe that Pantera was stealing his thoughts. Dimebag was a born and bred Texas musician who is still fondly spoken about in the Dallas music scene.

Males primarily carry out mass shootings. Females account for 4% of mass shootings in the US. Overall, women are less likely to commit homicide, period, with 10 to 13 percent of homicides in the US carried out by females. Women are also less likely to use firearms to carry out their homicidal impulses, with only 8 percent of firearm homicides committed by women (1). Today’s focus is on a woman who broke the norms in every way.

The Murder of Ashley Biggs (Justice for Ashley)

In most places, there is no statute of limitation on murder, so charges can be brought against someone regardless of how old the crime was. Thankfully, this allows justice to be served, even when a killer might think they have escaped punishment. That’s central to today’s episode.

Daughters Who Kill

Lizzie Borden took an ax, gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one. Lizzie Borden is arguably the most infamous case of parricide, although she was acquitted of the murders of her father and step-mother. But, Lizzie was by no means the last time a daughter killed her father or had her father killed. Today’s perpetrators are far from a modern-day Lizzie Borden, but the acts were no less horrific.

The Woman Who Stole Vermeer: A conversation W/ Author Anthony Amore

Rose Dugdale’s life is singularly notorious. Born into extreme wealth (she was a member of the last class of debutantes who were presented to the Queen), she abandoned her life as an Oxford-trained Ph.D. and heiress to join the cause of Irish Republicanism. While on the surface she appears to be the British version of Patricia Hearst, she is anything but. Dugdale ran head-first towards the action, spearheading the first aerial terrorist attack in British history by dropping bombs on a police station. Later, Dugdale was the mastermind and leader of the biggest art theft of her time, when she led a gang into the opulent Russborough House in Ireland to make off with millions in prized paintings, including a work by the mysterious master Johannes Vermeer. Dugdale thus became— to this day—the only woman to pull off a major art heist. The Woman Who Stole Vermeer will examine the likelihood that this was not her only such heist. Rose Dugdale was truly ahead of her time. It’s the perfect book for a wide audience. It will appeal to fans of true crime, fine art, and third-wave feminism.

The Case of David Camm: did he do it?

Despite many advances in forensic science, people are still convicted on the testimony of people who call themselves experts. Some of the testimony and evidence is based on what lawyers and other scientists call junk science. For one man, junk science meant 13 years in prison, before the expert witness was finally debunked.

GetVokl: Into The Forest And All The Way Through w. Author Cynthia Pelayo

Into The Forest And The Way Through (release date: August 28, 2020). It’s a sobering look at missing and murdered women of color whose stories often go ignored, their killers never held to account, and it’s a searing call to arms to examine these wounds.

Amazon link for further info: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GS6NJK4/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&qid=1598513559&refinements=p_27%3ACynthia+Pelayo&s=books&sr=1-1&text=Cynthia+Pelayo

Cynthia (Cina) Pelayo grew up in a haunted house with very superstitious parents in inner-city Chicago. She went on to pursue a Master of Fine Art in Writing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she says she majored in the macabre. Pelayo’s short story collection, Loteria, is a collection of 54 short stories that explores Latin American superstition, folklore, legend, and myth.

She is the Publisher/Gravedigger of Burial Day Books, a boutique horror press. She lives with her husband and two angry Shih Tzus in the very neighborhood she was raised. She wears black—most of the time—and she stays out of the sun as much as (un)humanly possible.
