The Laredo Serial Killer

If you’ve been immersed in the true crime world for some time, you’re likely aware of the unfortunate reality that perpetrators of violent crime disproportionately target specific groups in our society. Women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, drug users, and sex workers often find themselves facing violence at alarmingly higher rates than the general population. Tragically, the more these factors apply to an individual, the greater their vulnerability becomes to the darkest elements of society.

Thanks to Skip Hollandsworth of Texas Monthly, whose extensive coverage of this case made today’s episode possible.

The alarming prevalence of domestic abuse, also known as intimate partner violence, extends globally. According to the CDC, about 41% of women and 26% of men have encountered violence from an intimate partner. These statistics are inherently skewed due to underreporting, driven by various factors such as fear of disbelief, hesitancy among minority groups based on past experiences with authorities, and men feeling ashamed to admit vulnerability.
If you believe that you or someone you know might be experiencing intimate partner violence, please visit the National Domestic Violence Hotline at www.thehotline.org or call at 800.799.7233 if you are concerned about your internet usage being monitored.

Love Bites: A Jazz Tragedy

While the myth persists that pain enhances creativity and seeking help dulls artistic abilities, some artists indeed turn to illicit substances driven by a desire for heightened experiences. Jazz guitarist Brent Vaartstra aptly notes, “Artists are pleasure seekers […] They want to feel something different, be something different, so that they may get a different result. Creative minds are never satisfied with normality; they always seek stimulation in any way, shape, or form.”

Danielle Bertolini – Presented By Murder, She Told

Today, we have a special treat for you as we welcome a distinguished guest, none other than Kristen Seavey, the brilliant mind behind the Murder, She Told podcast.

In this episode, Kristen joins us to share a compelling and deeply personal case involving her friend, Danielle Bertolini. Kristen, a native Mainer, and dedicated victims’ advocate brings her unique perspective and meticulous research to unravel the mystery surrounding Danielle’s case.

Get ready for a gripping episode as Kristen guides us through the intricacies of this case. With her signature storytelling style, Kristen sheds light on the cold cases and unsolved mysteries that often lurk beneath the surface in the seemingly quiet corners of America.

From Kristen:

2014 – Fortuna, California.

In February of 2014, two women—Danielle Bertolini and Sheila Franks— went missing within one week of each other in Humboldt County, California. They were both last seen in the presence of the same man and were later known as part of the Humboldt County Missing Five.

Danielle and Sheila’s remains were later recovered near the Eel River in a similar location. Their killer hasn’t been brought to justice.

Danielle was a childhood friend of mine who grew up in Maine. Two years ago, I set out to bring light to her story and help her mother, Billie Jo, fight for justice. 2024 will mark ten years unsolved.

I have completely redone the original episodes to keep this story fresh, including updates.

This is the story of Danielle Bertolini.

SIGN THE PETITION! We are asking the Humboldt County DA to prioritize this case. You can help us make this happen. Please listen to her story and share this petition: change.org/danielleandsheila

Tamla Horsford: Unanswered Questions

The term “closure” stirs complex emotions within countless families. It’s a concept that doesn’t always sit well with those who have experienced the tragic loss of a loved one due to murder, individuals who have endured assault, and even detectives who sense that the full narrative of a victim remains untold. The question lingers: Can closure exist when there’s no way to recover what’s been taken away? No court ruling can ever resurrect a slain parent, a cherished colleague, or a best friend or erase the trauma inflicted upon a survivor of sexual assault. For many people, it’s entirely understandable that no jail time served by a perpetrator could ever compensate for the profound suffering endured by the victims and their families.

Double Jeopardy

Welcome to True Crime Cases with Lanie, the podcast that deepens into captivating criminal mysteries. Today’s episode explores the intriguing concept of double jeopardy, a fundamental principle in legal systems worldwide. Double jeopardy generally ensures that individuals cannot be retried for previously acquitted charges. However, as we’ll discover, this law has exceptions and complexities.

We examine real-life cases where suspects were initially found not guilty but later faced retrial, resulting in their eventual incarceration many years after the original crimes. Join us as we unravel the nuances surrounding double jeopardy laws and delve into the circumstances that led to these unexpected outcomes.

But before we begin, a content warning: This episode discusses sensitive topics, including the murder of children and the rape/sexual assault of a woman and a teenager. Please listen with caution.

They ALMOST got away with it…

In recent years, DNA has played a pivotal role in cracking cold cases, bringing justice to victims who have long been denied closure. One of the most notable successes was the identification of the Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist four decades after his notorious crime spree began. Today, we delve into the captivating stories of two other criminals who almost escaped the grasp of justice… until DNA intervened.

Love Bites: Love Triangles & Parachutes

The love triangle is a very popular trope in romance and young adult novels. The reader is driven throughout the story, wanting to find out whether our protagonist will choose the dark, brooding stranger or the warm and kind friend they’ve had since childhood. We’ve all encountered it in some form of popular media, and whether we love or hate it, it seems like it’s here to stay.

Influence of a Butterfly: Chaos Theory and a Murder Case

You’ve probably heard of the term “the butterfly effect.” It comes from chaos theory, the idea that something as small and seemingly insignificant as a butterfly flapping its wings could influence the path of a tornado that forms weeks later. Today, an appeal in Arkansas could have led to a retrial for a man who had been given a death sentence in Idaho a year earlier – after over 20 years of robberies, rapes, and murders.

Note: This episode discusses sensitive topics such as sexual assault, murder, sexual abuse, and the killing of minors. Please seek appropriate support if you are affected by these issues.

SPONSORS: Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, but indoor air could be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air, causing health risks. Almost half the population lives in areas with unhealthy air pollution levels. Airborne allergens like pollen, pet dander, and mold are common triggers for allergies and asthma. Introducing AirDoctor, an air purifier that CNN, Money, ABC, and more have featured. With its UltraHEPA filter, AirDoctor removes 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, including particles as small as 0.003 microns. The Carr Brothers

Wichita, Kansas, was a glorious snowy sight on the night of December 14th, 2000. The snow muffled all sound, and Christmas decorations twinkled warmly through the gloom… something that gave a faint glimmer of hope to a 25-year-old woman. The decorations shone as a light to guide her as she stumbled for nearly a mile across snowy grounds and over a barbed wire fence, freezing and severely injured, to seek help from anywhere and anyone who would offer it.

Stranger Than Fiction

It’s an almost laughable headline – “woman googles how to murder her husband.” Though the truth may be stranger than fiction, clickbait is precisely that – bait to get you to look at the story, a hook to spread it as far as possible so that news sites get as much traffic and, therefore, ad revenue as they can. But behind these humorous clickbait headlines are always stories of lives cut short and tragedies befalling people who just wanted to love and care for their spouses, only for them to turn around and commit the most permanent of all betrayals against them.

Content Warnings: This episode discusses mental health issues, manipulation, mentions of suicide

Introducing COLD: The Search for Sheree

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985.
She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles
Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished.

When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no
one could say how it got there.

When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police
always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was
distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went
missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who
lived a sinister double life.

Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for
investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and
evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley,
digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the
intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team
seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren?

However, that isn’t to say there are no cases of intentional gross negligence and misconduct. Today, we look at a case that threatens the integrity of a prominent forensic scientist, and the ground-breaking case that helped cement that same scientist’s career.

North and South Dakota are both known for their large expanses of farmland, sleepy towns, and close-knit communities. According to Safewise, both states’ violent crime rates are lower than the national average, and their residents feel safer than in most other states. The biggest threat to North and South Dakotans usually isn’t murder—it’s people stealing packages from their front porches. But, sadly, murderous romantic entanglements can happen anywhere.

Introducing: Suspect Season 2

For more than three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old
Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family
members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had
scoured every inch of the prairie. Jonelle’s face had been on milk cartons nationwide.

Even the President of the United States had appealed to the public for help. Still,
every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end.
Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky
Mountains.

With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been
hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn’t stop obsessing
over Jonelle’s disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside
Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT.

Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson
(Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases
in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from
guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder.

The World’s End

The city of Edinburgh, both above and below, is supposedly haunted by all manner of ghosts and ghouls. Though much of this remains a distant memory and fodder for ghost stories, tourists, and local schoolchildren, Edinburgh does have its very own tragedies from modern times. Even decades on, these events are still fresh in the minds of those who live there and throughout the rest of Scotland.

The Babysitter Killers

The innocent babysitter having to fend for herself and fight off or flee from a murderer in a house, either her own or the unfamiliar home of a family she works for, is a popular urban legend and the plot to many a teen slasher movie or campfire story… But sadly, as with most urban legends, it is a tale that does have some basis in reality, as we will see in the two cases covered in today’s episode.

The Crimes of David Copenhefer

Digital forensics is an integral part of crime scene investigations. Its study includes any information that is stored in binary form – smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and more digital devices can all contain useful information for a criminal investigation. Clearly, digital forensics has come a long way from back in the eighties, when police didn’t know how to handle computers, let alone the data stored on them… but it had to learn how to walk before it could run.

Content Warnings: abduction, ransom, descriptions of fatal gunshot wounds, murder, mentions of child pornography.

Murderous Ministers Pt. 3

In the Christian Bible, the last five of the Ten Commandments are, “Thou shalt not kill; Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shall not bear false witness; Thou shall not covet.” For far too many religious leaders, things go downhill when they break the tenth commandment by coveting a female member of their church – and, all too frequently, this leads to adultery.

Content Warnings: adultery, murder, abuse of power, religious trauma

Cold Season 3: The Search for Sheree

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985.
She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles
Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her
car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no
one could say how it got there.

When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police
always turn suspicious eyes toward her husband.

This season, host Dave Cawley,
digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case, and examines the
intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team
seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren?

Shannon Melendi

In the absence of many forensic tools yet to be invented, 18th-century investigators had their work cut out for them. This was especially true in murder cases where the victim’s body was never found. These are called bodiless murders or no-body cases. In the past, no-body cases made it nearly impossible to convict anyone of murder—what if the “victim” actually reappeared alive and well, after their accused murderer had been executed? That exact scenario, where the victim came “back to life,” happened at least two times. There have been an estimated 500 trials for no-body cases in the United States as of 2020. Of those 500 trials, approximately 40 cases have been solved in 15 states. On September 19th, 2005, the state of Georgia solved its first no-body case when it convicted the murderer of 19-year-old Shannon Melendi.
