The phrase “You can’t have your cake and eat it too” is an idiom that dates back several centuries. Its origins can be traced to the 16th century, although the exact phrase has evolved over time. Originally, the phrase appeared in different forms, such as “you can’t eat your cake and have it” or “you can’t have your cake and eat it.” The basic meaning has always been the same: once you consume or use something, you no longer have it to show off to others, removing the possibility of having everything exactly as one wants.

That year, they hit a record low, plummeting to under 50%, and it hasn’t bounced back since. This means that roughly half of all murders remain unsolved—an unsettling statistic, especially given the current surge in murders and violent crimes.

2014 – Fortuna, California.

In February of 2014, two women—Danielle Bertolini and Sheila Franks— went missing within one week of each other in Humboldt County, California. They were both last seen in the presence of the same man and were later known as part of the Humboldt County Missing Five.

Danielle and Sheila’s remains were later recovered near the Eel River in a similar location. Their killer hasn’t been brought to justice.

Danielle was a childhood friend of mine who grew up in Maine. Two years ago, I set out to bring light to her story and help her mother, Billie Jo, fight for justice. 2024 will mark ten years unsolved.

I have completely redone the original episodes to keep this story fresh, including updates.

The Carr Brothers

Wichita, Kansas, was a glorious snowy sight on the night of December 14th, 2000. The snow muffled all sound, and Christmas decorations twinkled warmly through the gloom… something that gave a faint glimmer of hope to a 25-year-old woman. The decorations shone as a light to guide her as she stumbled for nearly a mile across snowy grounds and over a barbed wire fence, freezing and severely injured, to seek help from anywhere and anyone who would offer it.

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985.
She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles
Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished.

When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no
one could say how it got there.

When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police
always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was
distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went
missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who
lived a sinister double life.

Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for
investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and
evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley,
digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the
intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team
seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren?
