Although true crime has experienced a huge renaissance over the last several years, movies based on true crimes have been popular for decades. In the 1930s, many movies were made, based on prominent gangsters of the time, such as Al Capone, and Ma Barker. However, in the mid-30s, when the Hays Code was enforced, much of the drama was watered down. It wasn’t until the 1960s that violence became prevalent on the screen, and well-known movies based on true crime were made, such as In Cold Blood and Bonnie and Clyde. Of course, in the 1970s and 1980s, made-for-TV movies based on true stories became popular. Movies typically take some liberties about the crimes and often have to leave out important details, to avoid a movie that’s several hours long.
